Dreams and Reason: Sculpture by Gary Justis in Collaboration with LJ Douglas
Jan 10 - Feb 18 / Tarble Art Center
Sculpture inspired by a life-long immersion in the cause-and-effect operations of machinery - including sound and video - as metaphors for the complexity and imperfection of human actions that "reveal the beauty in repetitive gestures that mirror life's irresolute choreography." Recent work was created in collaboration with Linda J. Douglas. Artist's lecture: Feb 2, 7 pm

Saturation: New paintings by Maria Tomasula
Jan 16 - March 21 / Brainard Gallery, Tarble Arts Center
Working with themes of identity, being and self-hood in the "post-human" age, these paintings work within and extend the tradition of Western paining, especially as developed in Latin America devotional art. Artist's lecture: Feb 25, 7 pm.

Fer Decoupe: Haitian Steel Drum Sculpture and More

Vintage metal works from the 1950s and 1960s by Haitian master sculpture Georges Liautaud and his artistic descendants, including contemporary artists from the village of Croix-des-Bouquets.

Sarah Vowell

Sarah Vowell is the best-selling author of five nonfiction books on American history and culture. By examining the connections between the American past and present, she offers personal, often humorous accounts of everything from presidents and their assassins to colonial religious fanatics, as well as thoughts on American Indians, utopian dreamers, pop music and the odd cranky cartographer.

Incorruptible: A Dark Comedy About the Dark Ages

Michael Hollinger's bawdy farce satirizing the fragility of faith in the face of survival is a fun, gentle rib-poking look at how humans gleefully twist our convictions to rationalize our bad behavior.

EIU Jazz Festival Concert

Guest artist Scott Wendholt, trumpet, will be featured in a performance with the EIU Jazz Ensemble as a part of the 51st annual Jazz Festival. The program will feature big band swing, well-know jazz standards and contemporary original compositions. 

EIU Choral Ensembles: Songs of Love

Eastern's Choral Ensembles presents a "tour de force" celebrating the majestics of love. Plus a special performance of Johannes Brahms' Vier Gesange fur Fraunchor, Op. 17. Special guest artists include Julia Jamieson, harpists, and EIU faculty member Katie McBain, horn.

EIU Percussion Ensemble

The EIU Percussion Ensemble brings to life music from across the globe.  In addition to standard works for large and mall percussion ensembles, the group will perform traditional music from Cuba and Brazil. Free admission.


Eastern Symphony Chamber Orchestra and Collegium Musicum: Water Music

This concert will include Water Music (Suite in F major, HWV 348) by Handel and Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland (original orchestration for 13 instruments).

EIU Jazz Combos

This evening will include performances by Eastern's three jazz combos. The concert will feature classic jazz arrangements by Eastern students. Free admission.

EIU Wind Symphony: The Art of the Wind Band

Eric Bibb with Grant Dermody

Already enjoying success in Europe, Grammy nominee Eric Bibb is becoming a familiar face — and voice — in the U.S. Nominated for nine W.C. Handy Blues Music Awards and winner of the Best Newcomer title in the British Blues Awards, Bibb has been appropriately described as "discreetly awesome" and "a total original." As his popularity escalates, earlier comparisons to legendary greats Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal are being replaced by quotes that speak to Bibb's ability to "use standard blues ingredients to cook up something all his own."

Celtic Crossroads

Celtic Crossroads has been critically acclaimed as "the most exhilarating and authentic show to come from Ireland in decades — not to be missed." This explosion of youthful energy and dazzling musicianship abounds with fusions of traditional Irish music, bluegrass, gypsy and jazz, along with the exciting rhythms of Irish dance percussion.

Girls Night Out: The Music of Clara Schumann and Cecile Chaminade

In this musical department guest recital, performers Kerry Walters, soprano (Bradley University) and Denise Parr-Scalin, piano (West Texas A&M University) perform the music of two often-overlooked women composers. Free admission.

Koresh Dance Company

Renowned for their powerful stage presence and high-energy style, Philadelphia's Koresh Dance Company has been hailed as an extraordinary newcomer to the national stage. Founded in 1991 by Israeli-born choreographer and Artistic Director Ronen Koresh, this troupe presents its audiences with an exciting and emotional blend of ballet, modern and jazz molded into a style of choreography that is both eloquent and explosive. There is something for everyone in Koresh's exhilarating performances.
 
Celebration: A Festival of the Arts
April 23-25 / Booth Library Quad next to the Doudna Fine Arts Center.
Three days of fun gets underway on Friday at 11:30 a.m. when the food booths open for lunch and the first band begins to play on the outdoor stage. The first day of Celebration features entertainment geared specifically with Eastern's students in mind. Celebration offers a wide range of arts activities for all ages. The festival typically includes a children's art area, demonstrations, an International Fair, storytelling, a delicious lineup of food vendors, and lots of live music. On Saturday and Sunday the annual fine arts fair welcomes a wide array of artisans selling hand-crafted works of art ranging from jewelry and stoneware to paintings and sculptures.

Eastern Symphony Orchestra and EIU Choral Ensemble: Songs of Fate

The program will include Romeo and Juliet Overture by Tchaikovsky and Schicksalslied by Brahms.com

EIU Jazz Ensemble

The ensemble, directed by Sam Fagaly, will perform a variety of big band music ranging from dance band classics to modern jazz. Many excellent student soloists will be featured.

EIU Choral Ensembles and Percussion Ensembles: Multi-Cultural Concert
April 30, 7:30 pm / Dvorak Concert Hall, Doudna Fine Arts Center
Jamie V. Ryan, director of the Percussion Ensemble and one of Eastern's newest faculty members, will be joined by the choral faculty members Richard Robert Rossi and Adam Stitch in an evening of multicultural music that spans the globe.
